GIVE is an acronym and the third letter “V” means to Validate.
A conversation with another person is going to be much more effective for you if you validate the experience of the other person.
When you begin the conversation with the other person, frame it with non-judgment. Validate the other person’s feelings, wants, difficulties and opinions about the situation. Find the “grain of truth” in what the other person is saying. Try to figure out what problems the other person might be having with your request, then acknowledge their feelings or problems.
Let the other person know that what they are feeling is real and that you’re aware of their feelings. If the other person knows that you appreciate what they are feeling, the conversation with them will be that much more effective.
